School Counselor Vs. Guidance Counselor; The Importance of a TitleThough many people believe "guidance counseling" and "school counseling" are phrases that are interchangeable, it is important to note the major differences between the two titles. To begin with, professional school counselors inherently follow the complete American School Counselor Association’s model for the standards and guidelines of the profession, whereas guidance counselors may be following some or none of the guidelines.
Professional school counselors grasp the notion of an ever-changing profession and use data to drive them into the correct direction. Guidance counselors tend to be ‘stuck’ in the procedures of the past and have an inflexibility with the needed changes of their profession. For some examples, professional school counselors work to serve all students in their school by creating proactive and preventative services and programs, whereas guidance counselors use a reactive approach to serve only some of their students. Professional school counselors constantly look at data on how services throughout the school are affecting students’ achievement and growth, whereas a guidance counselor may not even use data to track all students growth and needs, and if they do it would be to track only a select number of students. |
Guidance counselors tend to work in solitary, whereas a professional school counselor is an integral part of the school and will work in collaboration with teachers, administrators and staff members. Professional school counselors take on a holistic approach when working with students to assess how they can better impact them in different domains, like academic, socio/emotional and postsecondary and not only mental health, like the guidance counselor may only be focused on. School Counselors's tasks include acting as a change agent for students and challenging the status quo, fighting against the systemic boundaries that may be in place and becoming a true advocate for all students. Professional school counselors are key players in closing the achievement gap due to their use data to develop intentional targeted programs, and then use subsequent data to prove their motives and growth. They also use their position to develop relationships with other community partners, and systems of support to make sure every student is being served across many domains. Professional school counselors are change makers--- not only in their schools, but the community. Professional counselors make sure they provide access for all students in their tier 1 outreach, focus on all three domains, parent engagement, community involvement and knowledge of the school culture. The term "Guidance Counselor", in my opinion, suggests students only need a guiding hand and a bucket of advice; I believe that students need much more, in the form of correct Social & Emotional skills and tools given to them. School Counseling is how we can, as a LaSalle community, achieve those dreams. |
